- General Work Visa: Now through a Points-Based System (PBS)—need 100 points to qualify
- PBS Points: Qualifications (30–50), Salary (20–50), Experience (20–30), Job Offer (20), Language Skills (10)
- Salary Thresholds: R650,796–R976,194 (20 pts) or above R976,194 (50 pts) per year
- Sample Combos: Masters/PhD + R80,000/month; or Bachelor’s/Honours + R80,000/month + 10 years’ experience
- Initial Visa: Get a 12-month visa right away while your qualifications are reviewed by SAQA
- Critical Skills Visa: Still available if you’re on the critical skills list
- 12-month visa granted even if your SAQA evaluation isn’t done yet
- Labour Recommendation: As of 2025, no Dept. of Labour recommendation needed for General Work Visas
- Visitor Visa: Ideal for short-term tourism or business
- Visa-Free Travel: South Africans can travel visa-free to 58 countries in 2025 (hello, Kiribati and Rwanda!)
🛬 Residency & Citizenship
- Permanent Residency: Possible via work, marriage to a South African (5+ years), or as a dependent
- Must have lived in SA lawfully for a minimum time and offer economic benefit
- Application Fee: R1,520 (~90 EUR)
- Documents Needed: Application form, valid passport, work visa, marriage cert (if needed), police clearance, medical report, yellow fever vaccine (if needed)
- While you wait: Keep renewing your temp visa until permanent status is confirmed
- Residency Wait: Typically minimum 5 years
- Business Investors: No hard minimum investment for permanent residency, but business visa needs at least R5,000,000 (~297,553 EUR)
- Citizenship: Via birth, descent, or naturalization
- Birth: Born in SA before Oct 6, 1995 (or after, with extra requirements)
- Descent: Born to a SA parent abroad or adopted by a SA citizen and birth registered
- Naturalization: Hold permanent residency 5+ years, married to a SA citizen, or under 21 with permanent residency
